The Maryland beach story most people have never heard 💙

Right near Annapolis sits one of the most important beaches in Maryland history and most people have never heard of it. Carr's Beach was one of the only beachfront resorts in the region that welcomed Black Americans during segregation. It became a full-on cultural destination with James Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Ray Charles, Chuck Berry all performed there. One night Chuck Berry drew 70,000 people to a venue that held 8,000. Traffic backed up 23 miles to Glen Burnie.
The resort closed in 1974 and most of the land was developed. But five acres were saved. The City of Annapolis now owns it as Elktonia-Carr's Beach Heritage Park and it is being restored as a public waterfront heritage park with beach access. It is not fully open for swimming yet — but it is coming. And when it does, it will be one of the most meaningful beaches in Maryland to visit. Learn More Here.
