Hey Locals! 👋🏽

🍂 Can we talk about this weather?! We're getting some beautiful fall days, and I'm here for it! Perfect for getting outside, hitting a festival and enjoying Halloween weekend.

⏰ Don't forget, the clocks fall back an hour at 2 AM Sunday! An extra hour of sleep after Halloween sounds good to me. The sun setting earlier? Not so much. 😂 but there weekend is going to be in the 60’s and 70s so I am so excited for that!

🗳️ Election Day is November 3! If you haven't voted early or mailed your ballot, make a plan to vote. Don't forget to check those local ballot questions too. Some of them directly affect our parks, roads and communities!

Dementia Isn’t Always About Forgetting. Would You Recognize These Signs?

Beyond Memory billboard

I recently found out that Baltimore City has one of the highest Alzheimer’s rates in the entire country — tied for #1 out of 3,142 U.S. counties. According to a first-ever county-level study published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association (July 2023), 16.6% of Baltimore City residents aged 65 and older — roughly 88,000 people — are living with Alzheimer’s dementia. Baltimore tied with Miami-Dade County, FL and the Bronx, NY for the top spot. Prince George’s County came in at 16.1%, also among the highest in the nation. Maryland overall had the highest Alzheimer’s prevalence rate of all 50 states at 12.2%. The study also found that older Black and Hispanic Americans are diagnosed at significantly higher rates than white Americans.

That sent me down a rabbit hole. There are actually different types of dementia, and some show up in your 40s and 50s with zero memory loss. The people closest to you would be the ones to notice:

More irritated than usual • Losing interest in things they used to love • Confusion — like skipping purple on Purple Fridays when they’d never miss it • Doing things differently than they always have • Changing views on things they’ve stood firm on for years

If you see any of this in someone you love — or in yourself — it’s worth bringing up with a doctor. I shared these signs with someone close to me and they said it described exactly what’s been happening to them.

You’ve probably seen the Beyond Memory billboards around Baltimore. That’s the campaign. Keep an eye out.

Somewhere in Maryland

Did You Know This Kitchen Staple Started in a Baltimore Basement? 🧂

McCormick spices

Ok so I always knew McCormick had a big presence in Maryland but I had no idea they actually started here. Like, started started. In 1889, a 25-year-old named Willoughby McCormick was literally going door to door in Baltimore selling spices and extracts out of his basement. That’s it. That was the whole business. And that little basement hustle turned into McCormick & Company, the world’s largest spice company.

And they didn’t stop there. Baltimore-based McCormick invented Pumpkin Pie Spice in 1934. They own Old Bay. They own Frank’s RedHot. They’re even the ones supplying KFC’s 11 herbs and spices. The HQ eventually moved to Hunt Valley, but the roots are right here.

📅 On November 1, McCormick’s National Cinnamon Day is celebrated across the country — a holiday they created in 2019 to honor one of America’s most-used spices. So next time someone tries to say Maryland can’t season food, let them know the whole country seasons with ours.

Would You Change Your Life for Happiness? 🎭

This weekend I went to see a new play at the Everyman Theatre and walked away asking myself about words for happiness. What makes you truly happy and what words could change your world in a minute? This is the perfect play to attend with friends or, in my case, a parent. It runs until November 15th so grab tickets here before it ends.

Thanks for being one of the Locals. Hit reply and tell me one word that makes you happy. I read every one.

Hope to See You.…….Somewhere Local!
